Overdrive

Kn2 Series

The Kn2 Overdrive VST plugin aims to model a fine piece of Japanese engineering and what could be considered the very first mass-produced overdrive pedal.

Featuring asymmetric clipping and no tone control, this simple yet masterfully designed circuit is known to produce a rich, focused, and midrange-heavy sound. The circuit can be viewed as consisting of a preamp stage followed by a 2nd-order low-pass filter. Although not strictly accurate from a technical perspective, it can be said that the preamp generates and blends a distorted version of the input signal with a “clean” copy - a design characteristic often credited for its punchy and focused output.

Much like the stompbox modeled by the Kn2 Distortion plugin, this design also became the basis for many other overdrive pedals.

The model features two controls: Level and Overdrive. The Level control adjusts the output level of the processed signal, while the Overdrive control adjusts the gain of the preamp stage, gradually introducing asymmetrically clipped signal alongside the “clean” source.
